William Kentridge "The Refusal of Time"

I went to Metropolitan Museum and watched William Kentridge "The Refusal of Time" few weeks ago. Actually,at that time I went to Met to do other studio class assignment  and found out really curious art work. When I first entered the exhibition room, it was really dark and gave me mysterious mood. I saw images of shadow and clocks and wooden piece at first. Sound was really impressive and draw my attention. It was William Kentridge "The Refusal of Time" exhibition.  William Kentridge is a South African artist. Five screen and sculpture were played .

First of all, sounds pieces really linked videos. There were many layers in sounds and it gave South African mood someway. It was really loud and overwhelm viewers. Also, the moving sculpture really draw attention. It is made of wood and  It moves up and down. It kept moving like machine in 19th century. In screen, people can see various images. Huge metronomes ,shadows, people ,mysterious silver lines ,black dots or strokes appear and disappear in screens.

We can see linear and non linear time in his work.To me,everything seemed linear and non linear at the same time. It felt like I became heroine of some fantasy movie. I really liked the huge metronomes and it's sounds. To be honest, I really could not understand why we have to do sound project at that time. Now I really  understand how sound is important to video. Sound decide mood of videos.I also noticed that he interpreted  time in many ways. He used symbolic objects to show time lap and specific time just like we did. I was surprised that by this movie he wanted to refuse European colonialism. He interpreted time physically but also in very personal and political way. I used wood in the second project 'short and long time' as symbol of that takes long time to change. Therefore, when I saw his wooden piece, I felt similar. Wood needs long time to change but it change anyway in the end. I thought European colonialism may take long time to change but it could be change later.

Reading responses about Circular Ruins and Library of Babel

Circular Ruins

This short story was so confused at first.Because it felt like there were so many dreams in this story. After I read the story, I could understand why Ken mentioned about  Sisyphus.I just can't understand  Sisyphus. The myth keeps talking about him as really smart parson. However, I think he is really dumb.He just saw just short future he faced. He ends up with legendary pathetic person because of endless  punishment. The punishment is really cruel. The bad situation that keep repeats will drive person crazy.
It really reminds me my favorite movie inception. To me, dream is always interesting subject to talk. I like dream's mysterious unrealistic mood. Also, sometimes unconscious shows what our real inside is. In that aspect I thought the reading was interesting.

Library of Babel

I think the theme is really interesting. The book says there are only 25 character in the world and our life is completely depends on what book we are in. We just live life according to our book is written. Sometimes, I believe we all have fate. No matter how we try, situation just changed by fate. Sometimes I really do feel it. But, I do not want to believe that the fate is limited like this book says. I  do not want to say that I am one of the 25 character.

This book also really reminds me parallel life. Parallel life means people live parallel life with someone just like they are in same book. Many people said Lincoln and Kennedy lived parallel life. There are few evidence that their life is amazingly similar. I thought  it is really interesting and in some aspect the theory is believable. However, I hope not. I think everyone deserve their

Time final project

This video is about Dream.
The title is "Wonderland Dream" .
When we dream, we just accept awkward circumstances very naturally.
So, I thought dream is good subject to show linear and non linear time.
I tried hard to make mysterious dreamy feeling in this video .
I changed color and gave distort effects.
Also, I edited Sergei Rachmaninoff piano concerto. I changed order and speed.I added layer sounds too. I used clock ticking sound and bubble sound.
Because this is about dream, last part,  I used alarm sounds.

Process

                                                            New York Aquarium

My final project is about dream and I wanted to show underwater city.
Therefore , I went to the New York Aquarium to shoot.
I could find beautiful corals and scenes of underwater.
However, I could not find shark. New York Aquarium said because of typhoon sandy , they had to move shark to other place. It was really embarrassed.
But any way, I enjoyed underwater scenes.
